چکیده

The serum concentration of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) in 30 schizophrenic patients and 30 normal healthy subjects were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Ca in schizophrenic disorder patients was not increased significantly (P > 0.05) compared to that of the cohort controls. But the concentration of Fe in schizophrenic patients was significantly different from that of the cohort control (p < 0.000). The change in serum concentration of different trace elements may have some prognostic significance for the diagnosis of schizophrenic disorder. However further work is suggested to examine the exact correlation between trace elements level and the degree of disorder in schizophrenic patients.

CHANGES IN BLOOD LEVELS OF TRACE ELEMENTS AND ELECTROLYTES IN HYP ERTENSIVE PATIENTS

The involvement of elements in the pathological process of primary hypertension has been established. The serum levels of copper, iron, zinc, sodium, potassium and calcium were studied by atomic absorption spectrophotometery and flame photometry in hypertensive and normal subjects. Serum copper and zinc levels were increased in hypertensive patients (25.5% and 14.7% respectively) as compar...

P-42: Concentrations of Zinc, Copper, Iron, lead, and Cadmium in Ram Epididymal Tissue and Their Correlations to Serum Testosterone

Background With the advent of rapid industrialization, several chemicals are released in the air, water and soil. Chemical elements play a crucial role in male reproduction. Heavy metals exposure can adversely affect male fertility and result in severe impairment of testicular functions including germ cell death and inhibition of testicular steroidogenesis. The aim of this study was to investig...

The effect of 2 months of high-intensity interval training on serum levels of glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in male schizophrenic patients

Introduction: Oxide stress is important in the pathology of schizophrenia especially in the brain and it is higher than normal in these patients. In this study, we investigated the effect of intense intermittent exercise on serum glutathione and malondialdehyde in male schizophrenic patients. Materials and Methods: 28 male schizophrenic patients with a mean age of 39 years who were under th...

Blood Lead and Other Metal Biomarkers as Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease Mortality.

Analyses of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) in 1988 to 1994 found an association of increasing blood lead levels < 10 μg/dL with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. The potential need to correct blood lead for hematocrit/hemoglobin and adjust for biomarkers for other metals, for example, cadmium and iron, had not been addressed in the...

Relationships of lead, copper, zinc, and cadmium levels versus hematopoiesis and iron parameters in healthy adolescents.

To investigate the relationships of trace element concentrations vs hematopoiesis and iron parameters, we measured lead, copper, zinc, cadmium, and ferritin levels in 251 healthy adolescents. Concentrations of trace metals were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. There were no significant gender-related differences in serum copper or serum cadmium concentrations. However, blood l...
